Brings unparalleled expertise from leading one of the world’s largest correctional systems
SANTA MONICA, CA – JailGeek announced today that Hugh Hurwitz, former Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), has joined the company as a strategic advisor. With his background leading one of the world’s largest correctional systems, Hurwitz brings unparalleled expertise in detention administration that will directly enhance JailGeek’s ability to serve sheriffs and local jails.
Beginning his career as a Department of Justice honors attorney after clerking at the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, Hurwitz rose through the ranks to become the Federal Bureau of Prisons Procurement Executive. In May 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed him to lead the Federal Bureau of Prisons during a critical transition period, where he managed 122 prison facilities, 12 contract facilities, and more than 200 residential reentry centers, collectively housing 177,000 inmates under the supervision of 36,000 staff members.
This combination of legal expertise, operational experience, and procurement knowledge perfectly complements JailGeek’s mission to optimize federal reimbursement for local jails. With Hurwitz joining JailGeek advisory team members Steve Casey and John Scalia, JailGeek now offers unmatched capabilities to help local jails secure their full compensation.
The JailGeek advisory team’s extraordinary experience—spanning federal prison system leadership, detention economics expertise, and sheriffs’ operational challenges—creates a powerful coalition uniquely qualified to modernize federal detention agreements and protect taxpayer resources while ensuring fair compensation for housing federal detainees.
“I’ve had the privilege of watching Joe’s career evolve since he started as a junior contracts attorney at the DOJ Bureau of Prisons, where I served as his supervisor and mentor. Over the years, I’ve witnessed his deep understanding of detention economics and his genuine commitment to improving the system. Having managed the federal side of detention agreements myself, I understand both the complexity and the opportunity for improvement in how we compensate local facilities. Joe’s vision for JailGeek—combining technology with real-world expertise—has the potential to create more efficient, transparent, and fair partnerships between federal and local agencies. I’m excited to support him in building solutions that will benefit everyone involved.”
